The Garvault Hotel - The United Kingdom's Remotest Hotel

the UKs remotest hotel, Garvault Hotel, Kinbrace, Sutherland, Scottish Highlands, Griam Mhor, Beinn Griam, Loch Rimsdale,

Located on Griam Mhor at the base of the heather clad Beinn Griam in the Highland county of Sutherland, Scotland, is the United Kingdom's remotest hotel, The Garvault Hotel.

This small hotel, which has just eight rooms - 3 twins, 3 singles, 1 double and 1 family - overlooks Loch Rimsdale, the western most body of water of three connected lochs - Loch Badanloch and Loch nan Clair - which between them form a local resevoir, which are all fed by way of the fast flowing River Helmsdale.

The surrounding area is a haven for trout and salmon fishing, deer stalking, bird watching, hiking, cycling and horse riding.

The hotel's nearest community is the small town of Kinbrace, situated eight miles away, and the hotel's nearest large town is the Moray Firth's, coastal resort of Helmsdale,  situated 25 miles to the east.

The county of Sutherland as a whole is reknowned for the high, rugged cliffs of it's coastal inlets, secluded, white, sandy beaches and it's dramatically remote and sparsley populated interior which is dotted with ancient caves, dense forests, spectacular waterfalls, magestic lochs, heather clad mountains, remote castles and lonely moorland.

Most of the inhabitants of Sutherland live along the county's spectacular Moray Firth or Atlantic Sea coasts and the county boasts some beautiful fishing villages, including Lochinver, West Helmsdale, Durness and the United Kingdom's most north westerly point, Cape Wrath.

The county's main town of Dornoch is situated on the county's east coast on the Forth of Dornoch and is reknowned for it's Royal Golf Links, it's thirteenth century cathedral and it's medieval Castle of Dornoch and the former Skibo Castle, now known as the Carnegie Country Club, a popular venue for celebrity and high profile weddings of the rich and famous.

Towns within the county's interior are Lairg, famous for it's beautiful Falls of Shin, Tongue, famous for it's hilltop Castle Varrich and scenic Kyle of Tongue and Assynt, famous for it's nature reserve at Inverpolly and remote and hauntingly beautiful, Castle Ardvreck.

For those wanting to be as one with nature, this remote, moorland hotel offers the visitor to Sutherland a peaceful and tranquill base for accessing some of the United Kingdom's most dramatic and remote scenery, which plays host to a myriad of wild life, bird life and prehistoric, geological rock formations.

Situated a two hour drive from the Scottish Highland's capital at Inverness, the area is accessed by way of the Polmont to Scrabster, A9 coastal road - the U.K's longest highway - by joining the B897 road at Helmsdale to Kinbrace then joining the B871 road from Kinbrace to the Garvault. The area's interior has few roads and the few that are evident are sparsely used, making driving an unusually, pleasurable experience in the area.

Although Sutherland is home to the U.K's most north westerly point at Cape Wrath, Scotland's most northerly point is at John O Groats in the county of Caithness, some sixty four miles north of the Garvault Hotel.

The hotel offers a fully licensed bar, dining room, games room and lounge, all of which include either a log burning stove or traditional, peat fire.

Dining at the Garvault includes both breakfast and evening meals, both of which offer an extensive, traditional menu.

The very reasonable room rates set by the Garvault also include both meal prices and, in some cases, a packed lunch service.
